Her research focus is the relationship between the construction of linguistic identity(ies) and student motivation/engagement in language learning, especially in multilingual contexts.
Staples has a B.A. in modern languages from Royal Holloway, University of London; a master's degree in theoretical linguistics from the University of Oxford; and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, where she also worked as an assistant researcher between 2019 and 2020.
