Anemieke van den Dool is Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China. Van den Dool’s research focus is on policymaking and implementation in China, especially in the areas of health and environment. Her research identifies and explains the role of different stakeholders in policymaking; analyzes the driving forces of policy change; and assesses the design and content of public policies.

Her research has been published in the Policy Studies Journal, Policy & Politics, the Natural Hazard Review, Review of Policy Research, and the International Review of Public Policy. She has received the 2024 American Political Science Association Evan Ringquist Best Paper Award. Van den Dool also serves as Board Member of the Science, Technology, and Environmental Politics Section of the American Political Science Association and is 2025 Division Conference Chair. She is on the editorial board of China Policy Journal, Review of Policy Research, and Policy & Politics.

Van den Dool has a B.A. in Languages and Cultures of China from Leiden University, a M.S. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from the University of Manchester, Lund University, and Central European University (joint degree called MESPOM), and a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Amsterdam, where she was based at the Netherlands China Law Center. Before joining DKU, she worked with the environmental law project at the Natural Resources Defense Council Beijing Office; was as a high school teacher in Sweden; and taught public policy and crisis management as adjunct lecturer at Mid-Sweden University. She has also been a visiting scholar at East Asian Legal Studies at Harvard Law School.
