Visiting Lecturer of Media Studies, Duke Kunshan University
Dr. Giada Ferrucci is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research focuses on environmental justice, historical memory, and community archives, with a particular emphasis on Central America. Her work examines the intersections of environmental conflict, historical memory, displacement, and grassroots resistance, exploring how communities mobilize cultural, digital, and environmental resources to confront socio-environmental injustices. She is especially interested in environmental memory and communication, extractivist industries, and participatory approaches to knowledge production.
Her teaching interests at Duke Kunshan University include environmental humanities, media studies, memory studies, global challenges, environmental communication, digital media, social movements, and qualitative research methods.
Ferrucci serves as Visiting Lecturer of Media Studies at Duke Kunshan University under the Duke-DKU Global Fellows Program. In this role, she teaches undergraduate courses, advises students on coursework and Signature Work projects, contributes to curriculum development, and supports interdisciplinary academic initiatives. She just completed a Postdoctoral appointment for the project Surviving Memory in Postwar El Salvador at the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS), Western University, where she contributes to collaborative research projects on historical memory, environmental justice, and community-led archival initiatives.
Her publications have appeared in leading journals including the Journal of the American Musicological Society, NACLA Report on the Americas, Nuevo Mundo Mundos Nuevos, Crítica y Resistencias, and (Con)textos. She has also contributed chapters to edited volumes on memory, environmental conflict, environmental justice, and social movements in Central America. In addition to her academic research, she has collaborated extensively with community organizations, museums, archives, and grassroots movements in El Salvador and Canada on projects related to memory, environmental justice, and public scholarship.
Ferrucci received her Ph.D. in Media Studies from Western University, Canada, with a Collaborative Specialization in Environment and Sustainability. She holds an M.A. in International Studies from Aarhus University, Denmark, and a B.A. in Economic Development and International Cooperation from the University of Florence, Italy. Before joining Duke Kunshan University, she served as a Postdoctoral Scholar and Course Instructor at Western University, where she taught courses on climate change communication, media and environment, and environmental justice.
