Lauren Knowles

Lola’s research interests are centered around language acquisition, multilingualism and identity. She is particularly interested in how different situations and contexts influence multilinguals’ language perception and performance, and how speakers of multiple languages can acquire, lose and reacquire their languages. She is interested in the human capacity for language learning, and uses linguistics-grounded ideas in an educational context. 

Her primary area of action research in teaching interests has been educational technology. She has been involved in a number of projects researching various digital engagement tools, using AI assisted portfolios and facilitating experiential learning. Her publications in this area include critical evaluations of technological implementations with a view to encourage meaningful digitalisation in higher education. She currently sits on the editorial board of the journal Patterns of Practice: An International Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

She has been teaching English for Academic Purposes since 2013, firstly in the UK for both Newcastle University and UCL, then in China for the University of Nottingham Ningbo, and in Qatar for Liverpool John Moores University. Her roles in addition to teaching have included course leading, giving her extensive experience in curriculum and assessment design. In addition to this, she is an experienced teacher trainer and ELT examiner, including conducting DELTA and PGCHE assessments and mentoring for colleagues. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has acted as a mentor and peer-reviewer for this award. 

 

She obtained her BA from the University of Nottingham, then going on to complete both her Certificate and Diploma in Teaching English Language to Adults through Cambridge University ESOL. She completed her MA in English Linguistics from Birmingham City University.
